The Windsor-Essex Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is a nonprofit community based program that has served the people of Essex County for over 25 years. Cardiac Rehab is designed to help individuals learn how to manage their heart disease and improve their health through exercise and lifestyle adjustments. Aside from exercise, areas addresses in rehabilitation sessions include reducing risk factors for heart disease, stress management, family support, and diet and nutrition. Participants are given an individualized exercise prescription based on their cardiac and general condition. Education pertaining to heart disease and making the necessary life changes to better manage it is also provided. The program generally meets 4 times per week between September and June in the St. Denis Athletic Centre at the University of Windsor, with sessions lasting between 1 and 1½ hours.

The benefits of this cardiac rehabilitation program include improved physical fitness and cardiovascular efficiency, reduced potential for future heart problems and hospital admission, better quality of life, decreased anxiety and depression, and greater self image and morale. The active support group provides a strong support system of people who have “been there, done that”. Student’s from the U of W’s Human Kinetics and Nursing programs work with participants in their quest for healthy living and cardiac wellness.

Recently, the program has been struggling to remain open due to a lack of funding, despite the program’s proven success in the community. Funding for the program is obtained through small membership fees, donations from the public, and contributions from local service clubs and organizations. The program was nearly forced to shut its doors in January 2008, but a last-minute fundraiser and corporate donations helped to save this valuable asset to the community.

On July 29th, 2004 the University of Windsor lost a valued member of its community. Evelyn Manera was a beloved friend, Human Kinetics student and trainer for the men’s basketball team who will be dearly missed. It is in her honour that the Faculty of Human Kinetics has created a scholarship fund to financially assist other Kinesiology students that personify Evelyn’s zest for life and bring an equally amazing contribution to Human Kinetics and the University community.

In Evelyn’s honour, the Faculty of Human Kinetics has created the "Evelyn Manera Memorial Scholarship". This fund is awarded annually to a female Human Kinetics student whose affection and enthusiasm for life reflects and honours the qualities that Evelyn brought to the community. The scholarship is provided in order to offer this student an opportunity to further pursue her studies in the field of Kinesiology. To date, Tri-For-Life has raised over $20,000.

In 2005, under the guidance of former UofW Kinesiology Assistant Professor, Dr. Jay Johnson, the "Strategic Planning of Sporting Events" class established the Tri-For-Life Triathlon to assist in the funding of the Evelyn Manera Memorial Scholarship. Since then, the Human Kinetics Society has continued the triathlon fundraiser in 2007, 2008, and again this year in 2009.

In its 4th installment on March 22nd 2009, participants from the Faculty of Human Kinetics, University of Windsor and the Windsor-Essex community will take part in the triathlon, including running, biking and swimming, at the University's St. Denis Center. This year looks to include a record number of participants in one of Canada's only indoor, time-trial format triathlons! This event caters to individuals of all ages and abilities. From the recreational exerciser to elite athletes, the Tri-For-Life can push you as much or as little as you would like: you dictate the pace! Supported by the cheers of dozens of fans and exceptional volunteers, we guarantee that you will remember this event forever! Within a fun-filled aerobic hour you will swim, bike and run your way to the finish line and officially be able to call yourself a triathlete! Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to help your local community.
